The music begins: eerie, strangely alluring. Then it turns raw, erotic, violent — like symphonic rock ‘n’ roll, with staggered, dance-to-your-death rhythms and crunched chords, one of which repeats some 200 times. Quickly, mayhem breaks out in the hall, the audience dividing into camps. There’s shouting. Insults are hurled at the stage. By some accounts, blows are exchanged. Amid the racket, the dancers can’t hear the music. Stravinsky flees his seat. For a century now, the “Rite” has excited audiences and inspired performers. It should do so again next month, first in Berkeley at the Ojai North! festival, co-presented by Cal Performances, where choreographer Mark Morris will reimagine the “Rite” with his troupe, the Mark Morris Dance Group. Titled “Spring, Spring, Spring,” his new work will unfold to a recent arrangement of Stravinsky’s work by the Bad Plus, a jazz trio — one that likes to blow up genres and expectations — performing it live. Then, in San Francisco, Tilson Thomas will place the “Rite” at the center of a San Francisco Symphony festival of Stravinsky’s works. He hopes to “connect the dots” between the composer’s fascination with the raw folk music he heard as a youth in the Russian countryside and numerous of his major works, most notably “The Rite of Spring.”.
