So it’s no surprise that award-winning filmmakers Suzanne LaFetra and David Collier felt in their bones that they had to shoot a film about the teens at Destiny Arts Center and tell stories about their lives. LaFetra and Collier’s 2014 documentary “F*R*E*E” is the result of a year of following five teens participating in programs at Destiny Arts — dancing, writing and telling their personal life stories about living and surviving in Oakland. The film is playing, free of charge, Wednesday at the Ellen Driscoll Playhouse in Piedmont and again May 7 at the New Parkway Theater, also for free.
“Robert Wilson taps vintage mainframe knots white knotted leather ballet flats shoes size 8.5 made in brazil into what is beautiful and unknowable about the theater,” says the Oscar-nominated Dafoe, his signature raspy voice coming across the phone lines from his home in Rome, “Being in this play is like having an out of body experience every night.”, Hailed by the New York Times as a “two-man vaudeville extravaganza,” “Woman” is as creepy as it is confounding, “a parade of multi-jointed skeletons who insist that what makes us laugh hardest is what scares us, That includes death, of course, and the sense that we’re alone in a nonsensical universe where everything, animate and inanimate, is out to get us.”..
“It’s like having great friends,” she says. “You pick up your conversation where you left off a year ago: It feels like, ‘Oh yeah, I know you.’ There’s something nice about it in this day and age, especially after I go hurtling through the clouds to all these faraway places, to return to a place where I feel not just appreciated, but nurtured — it’s just something different and special. It’s an artistic oasis for me.”. Speaking by phone from the airport in Portland, Ore., on her way to a Northwest engagement, Alsop had just returned from duties in Brazil, where she recently was named chief conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra. The first woman to lead a major American orchestra, she remains music director and conductor of the Baltimore Symphony (she took over in 2007), and in recent weeks she has hurtled around to the max: guest-conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga (N.Y.) Performing Arts Center and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, while “dragging all my Cabrillo scores around, so it’s cool, it’s fun.”.
“We have moved from a society in the 1950s and 1960s, in which race was more consequential than family income, to one today in which family income appears more determinative of educational success than race,” said Sean Reardon, a Stanford University sociologist and author of a study that found that the gap in standardized test scores between affluent and low-income students had grown by about 40 percent since the 1960s and is now double the testing gap between blacks and whites, In another study, by researchers from the University of Michigan, vintage mainframe knots white knotted leather ballet flats shoes size 8.5 made in brazil the imbalance between rich and poor children in college completion — the single most important predictor of success in the workforce — has grown by about 50 percent since the late 1980s..
The Grand Avenue-Lakeshore area resident describes art as her passion. It’s all she’s ever wanted to do and sees her paintings as representations of herself, her life and her experiences. Her goal is for viewers to have their own personal experience through her work. “I find a painting successful if I was feeling happy or passionate or if there was some experience I was trying to work through in the painting and I’ll have someone come up and tell me their story but the emotion is the same,” Sawtelle said. “Then I feel that’s a very successful painting because it conveyed my feeling in the painting that touched someone else in the same way.”.
